The History & Context
Since 2017 the CAgrO Urban Agriculture Program at 214 Kingsley Street, has increased the availability of fresh, locally grown produce to low-income communities in Western New York. Their plot of land on the East Side of Buffalo provides healthy, tasty fruits, vegetables, and herbs to various assistance programs, and they work closely with local farms to supply their CAO Mobile Market.
East Side Stewards has been contracted through the 2025 growing season to create tangible solutions for food insecurity, environmental justice, and economic empowerment. The revitalized space will not only serve as a source of fresh, locally grown produce, but also as a platform for youth engagement, agricultural education, and workforce development.
Project Summer 2025 Update
Over the course of just 2 months, ESS has been able to transform this previously overgrown in-ground farm. Over the course of this time we constructed/filled eight 16’ x 5’ raised beds, installed trellises, designed interactive urban agriculture workshop stations, planted over 100 transplants from plants we grew at the MLK Greenhouse, sown hundreds of seeds, refurbished the compost system, installed an efficient transfer pump watering system and portable sink.
